Five rainy day activities to do with your child!

#1 Goop!

This is a very simple recipe to make your own goop! It is very easy to make and fun for kids to learn how something can be liquid and solid at the same time!

To make: 2 cups cornstarch, 1 cup water, optional food coloring

That’s it! To adjust the amount, just make sure your cornstarch to water ratio is 2:1.

#2 Shaving Cream!

That’s right, shaving cream. This has kept my oldest daughter and my niece and nephew entertained for over an hour in one sitting! On a table surface using classic men’s shaving cream, simply spray down a pile and let the kids go at it! Kids can form it into a pile, or spread it out and draw in it, then wipe it over and draw again! It doesn’t stain, and evaporates as they play with it so you may need to spray down more for them. And when they are done, simply wipe off the table surface!

#3 Corn!

Using an under-the-bed storage container, buy a large bag of dry corn from any discount store. Add in measuring cups, sand toys, toy trucks, and any other toys you’d like.

The plus side of using corn is it is larger and less messy than traditional sand, and is very easy to store to use again and again.

#4 Make your own play dough!

To make: 3 cups flour, 1/4 cup salt, 2 packages koolaid mix (any flavor/scent), 1 Tblsp Alum (you can find this with the seasonings in any grocery store), 3 Tblsp vegetable oil, 1 cup water. Mix all ingredients together until combined, then knead with hands until you get a playdoh consistency. It will be sticky when first mixing together. Add flour 1-2 Tblsp at a time as needed when kneading until the right consistency forms. Store in an air tight container for 1-2 weeks.

This has been a favorite recipe since I was a kid, and I even used this as one of my high school speeches!

#5 Indoor Obstacle Course!

Using painter’s tape, you can mark a course on the floor that comes up easily when you’re done. Add in challenges such as spin in a circle, throwing cotton balls into a tupperware container, jumping over a line or small box, or make an animal sound. You can also set up the tape so that it creates a maze either for the child or for a toy or care to go through.

Have Fun!!
